Typical price: $1,200–$3,500+ depending on size and condition. See our full pricing guide for details.

Deck sanding

Professional deck sanding removes the top layer of weathered, grey, splintering timber and reveals fresh wood underneath. It's the foundation of every good restoration — get the prep wrong and the finish won't last.

Why professional sanding beats DIY

Home rental sanders are underpowered and time-consuming. A commercial Lägler Hummel belt sander cuts through weathered timber in a fraction of the time, delivers a genuinely flat finish, and includes dust extraction. We can do in one day what takes a DIYer a weekend of frustration.

Sanding is essential when:

  • Deck has turned grey or silver from UV damage
  • Old coatings are peeling, flaking, or uneven
  • Timber is splintering or has surface cracks
  • Boards are cupped or bowed
  • You're switching from oil to stain (or vice versa)

Typical price: $25–$60 per square metre depending on timber species, deck condition, and access. Hardwoods like Ironbark and Spotted Gum cost more than softwood or Merbau.

Deck staining and oiling

The finish is what protects your timber and determines how long the restoration lasts. On the Gold Coast, choosing the right product matters more than most homeowners realise.

Oil vs stain — which is right for your deck?

Penetrating oils (e.g. Cutek CD50, Intergrain UltraDeck Oil): Soak deep into the timber, provide UV protection from the inside out. Best for hardwoods like Merbau, Spotted Gum, Ironbark. Weather to a natural grey patina if you want that look; can be pigmented for colour retention.

Water-based stains (e.g. Cabots Aquadeck): Sit on the surface, offer stronger colour and quicker application. Easier to recoat. Better for softwood or when you want a distinct colour that matches your home.

Solid/opaque stains: Provide the strongest UV protection and hide imperfections, but change the appearance more dramatically. Good for older decks where you want a fresh, uniform look.

We'll recommend the right product for your timber species, sun exposure, and desired look — not the one with the biggest margin.

Products we use

  • Cutek CD50 & Cutek Extreme — Penetrating preservative for silver-grey or natural finishes. Excellent for coastal exposure.
  • Intergrain UltraDeck Oil — Premium tinted oil, good balance of colour and protection.
  • Cabots Aquadeck — Water-based stain, easy application and recoat cycle.
  • Sikkens Cetol Deck — Long-life stain for hardwoods.

Typical price: $20–$35 per square metre for staining/oiling only (assumes deck is already sanded and prepped). Standard restorations include 2–3 coats.

Board repairs and replacement

Rotting, split, or splintering boards need to come out before restoration. Same with popped nails, loose railings, and any structural issues. This is safety-critical — a compromised board can fail under foot traffic and cause injury.

Common repair jobs

  • Replacing rotten or termite-damaged boards
  • Fixing bouncy or spongy sections (usually joist or bearer damage)
  • Repairing damaged edges around pool areas or stairs
  • Replacing corroded fixings (nails, screws)
  • Tightening or replacing loose railings and balustrades
  • Structural repairs to bearers, joists, and posts

For most restorations, minor repairs (up to five boards) are included. Larger repair jobs are quoted separately after inspection.

Typical price: $80–$150 per board supplied and fitted, depending on timber species. Structural repairs quoted on inspection.

Maintenance recoats

The smartest way to protect your deck long-term. A maintenance recoat every 2–3 years costs a fraction of a full restoration and keeps your timber protected before real damage sets in.

When to book a maintenance recoat

  • Your existing finish is fading but not peeling
  • Water is starting to soak into the timber instead of beading
  • It's been 2–3 years since your last coat
  • You want to keep the deck looking fresh without a full sand-back

Maintenance recoats include a gentle clean, light spot sanding of any problem areas, and one to two fresh coats of your existing product. No mess, no disruption, usually done in a day.

Typical price: $30–$35 per square metre for a standard maintenance recoat.

Pre-sale deck restoration

Selling your home? Your deck is often one of the first things buyers see when they walk out the back door — and a weathered, grey deck sends the wrong message. A restored deck can add real money to your sale price and remove a common negotiation point.

Why pre-sale restoration pays off

  • Higher sale price — Real estate agents consistently report restored decks add $5,000–$15,000 to final sale prices, depending on the property.
  • Faster sales — Well-presented outdoor spaces reduce days on market by removing buyer objections early.
  • Stronger photos — Your deck becomes a hero feature in the listing photos, not a liability the agent has to work around.
  • Fewer negotiation points — Buyers won't use it as ammunition to knock $5–$10k off your asking price.

We work with tight listing timelines. Most pre-sale restorations complete in 3–5 days — well ahead of your photography and open home dates.

"Deck went from embarrassing to the hero photo in our listing. Agent said it added at least $8k to the sale price. Worth every cent." — Sarah M., Burleigh Heads homeowner
Timber Species

We work with all Gold Coast deck timbers

Different timbers demand different products, prep, and finishing techniques. Here's what we see most on the Gold Coast.

Merbau

The most common deck timber on the Gold Coast. Rich reddish-brown when finished, weathers to grey without protection. Needs tannin management on first coat. Good candidate for penetrating oils.

Spotted Gum

Australian hardwood with beautiful pale-to-honey grain. Very dense — takes longer to sand but holds finishes exceptionally well. Common in premium builds and waterfront homes.

Ironbark & Blackbutt

Extremely dense hardwoods that handle UV and coastal exposure better than most. Ironbark is dark reddish-brown; Blackbutt is pale golden. Both are premium timbers requiring premium products.

Treated Pine

Budget-friendly softwood found on many older Gold Coast decks. Sands faster than hardwood but needs more frequent maintenance. Solid stains often work best for pine.

Not sure what your deck needs?

We'll come out, inspect it, and give you honest advice — even if that means telling you a recoat is all you need. Free, no pressure, no obligation.
