A good comparison helps you understand the preparation, repairs and finish involved. A wet surface, different light or a different camera position can also change how a deck looks.
The actual scope
Ask whether the job included stripping, sanding, repairs or replacement. A new deck is not evidence of what a maintenance coat can achieve.
The right expectations
Ask for the timber, product and maintenance requirements. A surface photograph cannot show the condition of concealed supports or establish safety.

Photograph the problem,
not just the whole deck.
From a safe position, take one wide photo and closer photos of coating failure, rough boards and access. Mention the timber and last product if known.
Keep people, house numbers and personal information out of the photos. Do not step onto unsafe areas or move heavy objects for a photograph.
